Top 5 Video Game Robots

28.02.11 / Uncategorized / Author: / Comments: (1)

There are a lot of robots in video games, but which ones are the best? Read this list to find out the 5 best robots in gaming.

(Note: The robots on this list have only appeared in games rated E to T.)

#5:  Heavy Lobster

First Appearance: Kirby Super Star

Of all the robots on this list, Heavy Lobster is probably the most obscure. Heavy Lobster was created by Meta Knight in Kirby Super Star to distract Kirby while he escaped in his airship, the Halberd. Heavy Lobster later appears on the Halberd to chase Kirby down & defeat him in battle. What makes Heavy Lobster special is that the paintballs it releases can be sucked up to gain the rare Paint ability. When Paint is used on Heavy Lobster, it turns red & is blinded, making the battle a breeze. It also appears in The Arena (and Helper to Hero in Kirby Super Star Ultra) as one of the many bosses Kirby & his partners must defeat.

#4: Mecha-Koopa

First Appearance: Super Mario World

If Mario could survive the perils of the Valley of Bowser in Super Mario World, he would make it to the front (or back) door of Bowser’s Castle. Among the plethora of obstacles found in the castle were Mecha-Koopas. These annoying pests could not be defeated with normal stomps: they can only be defeated by Spin Jumps (normal jumps just stunned them). However, these robots were the key to winning the final battle: they had to be stunned, picked up, & thrown at Bowser’s head.

#3: Emerl

First Apperance: Sonic Battle

Though Emerl had only one game appearance, he is still one of the coolest robots in gaming. Emerl has the special power to copy skills from people he sees. Soon everyone wanted to get their hands on the robot. In the anime Sonic X, Emerl is a force to be reckoned with: his powers helped him win a fighting tournament, & later allowed him to defeat Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, & Rouge the Bat with ease. Fun Fact: Emerl is powered by Chaos Emeralds, inspiring Sonic to give Emerl his name.

#2: Metal Sonic

First Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog CD

Metal Sonic deserves the reward for most evil robot on this list. He first appeared in Sonic CD for the Sega CD, where he kidnapped Amy Rose. Metal Sonic has made many appearances in Sonic games, including Sonic Drift 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Rivals, Sonic Free Riders, & Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Metal Sonic will (SPOILERS) also appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2.

#1: R.O.B.

First Appearance: Gyromite

If it weren’t for R.O.B., you probably wouldn’t be reading this list right now. When stores refused to sell the NES, Nintendo decided to bundle R.O.B. & the Zapper with the NES & pitch it as a toy. Sure, it was a pain to assemble, & it was only used for 2 games (Gyromite & Stack-Up), but it saved the video game market from crashing (Atari games were becoming so bad that video games weren’t popular anymore). R.O.B. also appeared in Mario Kart DS, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Super Paper Mario, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, & Pikmin 2. We’ll always remember you, R.O.B.

As stated in the introduction by Tony Mott:

“Many lists detailing the ‘world’s top 100 video games’ have been published over the years-indeed, I’ve been responsible for a few-but 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die is a more ambitious collection.”

To show how ambitious the book is, here is just a tiny sample of the 1001 best video games:

*Pong
*WarioWare: Twisted!
*Sonic Adventure
*Pac-Land
*Wii Sports Resort
*Picross DS
*Rayman Raving Rabbids
*Mario vs. Donkey Kong

But sorry, motion control fans-the Kinect & the PlayStation Move only get a mention in the intro. If you love video games, nostalgia, or the 1001 series, I definitely recommend buying this.

Obtain Dashell

Once Wracktail is beaten in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials, A Pixl named Dashell joins your party. Dashell’s power allows you to run fast.

Obtain Piccolo

There are 12 steps to follow in order to unlock Piccolo:

1. Visit Merlee.
2. Visit Merluvee.
3. Visit Bestovius.
4. Visit Watchitt.
5. Visit Merlumina.
6. Visit Watchitt again.
7.  Visit Bestovius again.
8. Visit Merluvee again.
9. Visit Merlee again to recieve a key.
10. Take the key to a locked door on the 1st floor of Flopside.
11. Use the key to unlock the door, then enter.
12. Open the treasure chest in the room to have Piccolo join your party.

Piccolo’s power is playing music. This music can remove curses placed by Cursyas, melt certain blocks, & put the Underchomp to sleep.

Flopside Pit of 100 Trials

After the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials is cleared, a switch appears in a room in Flopside. Hitting the switch allows access to the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials. The Flopside Pit of 100 Trials is significantly harder than it’s Flipside counterpart, as all enemies have been replaced by dark, stronger enemies (ex. Goomba is replaced by Dark Goomba). Upon reaching the 100th room, a strange being states you will have to make a second run through the pit, & sends you back to the first room.

Once you complete your second run, the being introduces itself as Shadoo & says that “your clones are ready.” Upon saying this, Dark Luigi appears, whom you must battle. Upon Dark Luigi’s defeat, Dark Bowser appears, who must be beaten. Once Dark Bowser is defeated, Dark Peach appears, then Dark Mario. If Dark Mario is beaten, Shadoo will disappear, & 8 chests will appear. Each chest contains either a card of one of the heroes, or one of their dark forms. These cards boost the heroes’ attack power, & the Mario card allows Mario to infinitely remain in 3D.

Sammer Guy Tournament

After beating the game, the Sammer Guy Tournament can be fully played. Once Sammer Guy 99 (Pit of Crying Shames) is defeated, a strong Sammer Guy named End Boss can be faced. End Boss is fast, uses a rolling attack, attacks with a club, breathes fire, & has a spike on his head. Once End Boss is defeated, Mario & his friends recieve 7 Catch Cards, one for each of Mario’s partners in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Hammer Whacker

Once the player obtains the Golden Card (found in a hidden room in Flopside’s bar), a new game in the Flipside Arcade named Hammer Whacker is unlocked. In this game, you must use a hammer to knock Koopa Shells at a Koopa Striker.

Fun Fact:

Seth Gordon, director of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, has considered adapting Super Paper Mario into a movie.

Wario Land: Shake It!

28.11.10 / Uncategorized / Author: / Comments: (0)

Boss Missions

Once the game is beaten, Wario can rematch all bosses in the game infinitely, this time with missions to clear.

Secret Maps

Some levels have secret maps hidden in them. When Wario preforms an Earthshake Punch on top of a secret map’s hiding spot, it appears for Wario to grab. Once the level has been beaten with a secret map in Wario’s possession, a secret level is unlocked. Secret maps can be found before & after the game is beaten, but after the game is beaten, the maps’ hiding spots are revealed by a sparkle over them.

Where to Find Secret Maps

This is a chart showing where secret maps are & the areas they unlock.

Level Found             l Level Unlocked
_______________l__________________
Whoopsy Desert     l Disturbing Tomb
Foulwater Falls       l Gurgle Gulch

Ending Movie

Once the game is beaten, the ending movie can be purchased at the Pirate Shop for 100,000 coins.

Ending Song

Once all missions in the game are completed (including the boss missions), the song that plays during the credits is unlocked to listen to anytime.

Golden Workshop

Once all treasures in the game have been collected, Wario’s workshop becomes covered in gold.

Instant Mario Party!

27.11.10 / Uncategorized / Author: / Comments: (0)

Mario Parties are hard to set up: you need to choose a character, pick settings, choose a board, & find people to play with you. Fortunately, I have recently discovered a way to have a Mario Party that is easy & fun to play.

Though Nintendo deletes video games’ websites over time, the old game Mario Party 4′s website is still up & running. That’s where the instant Mario Party begins. The website’s main attraction is a watered-down-yet-just as fun-to-play Mario Party. To start, you must pick your character (a.k.a. Party Pal)-you can choose from Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Daisy, Wario, & Waluigi. Then, you must pick your host. The host you choose determines the board you play (ex. choosing Goomba results in a casino theme). After that, you start your game.

You move your character via the dice at the top of the screen. True to the Mario Party spirit, different spaces with different effects litter the board. Blue Spaces give you 3 coins, & Red Spaces make you lose 3 coins. Mushroom Spaces give you either a Mega Mushroom or a Mini Mushroom, allowing you to cross special passages. Happening Spaces allow you to play a minigame (more on those later) & Fortune Spaces let you play a Fortune Minigame (more on those later).

And what is a Mario Party without minigames? For a mini-Mario Party, the minigames are very fun. They range from steering a Koopa ship away from a rushing wave to driving a car through a maze of deadly balloons in a race against time. Also present are Fortune Minigames, which rely entirely on luck (playing pinball, picking fortune cookies, etc.) in an attempt to win coins. You can only play Fortune Minigames until you run out of coins or win 3 times, leaving them a rare opportunity.

Passing an info booth gives you a fact about Mario Party 4, along with an image. Occasionally, the board’s host will activate an event (ex. turning all Red Spaces into Blue Spaces). Also, there are no opponents, leaving only Red Spaces & Fortune Minigames to chisel away your coins. Finally, Item Shops allow you to buy Mario Party 4 wallpapers & screensavers with your coins.

Final Mario Anniversary Update

26.11.10 / Uncategorized / Author: / Comments: (1)

This will be the final update on the happenings for Mario’s 25th anniversary.

The new red Mario Wii has been released. In addition to Wii Sports,  New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be bundled with the Wii. Similar to Wii Sports, the disc for New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be contained in an envelope rather than a box. It will come with a red Wii Remote Plus (a Wii Remote with a Wii MotionPlus built inside). Other Wii Remote Plus colors are available, but this red Wii is the only way to obtain the red one. Super Mario Bros. will be pre-installed on the Virtual Console, with all ?s on ? Blocks being replaced by the number 25.

The red Mario Nintendo DSi XL has also been released. It has 3 Mario power-ups (Mushroom, Fire Flower, Star) & the words “Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary” embedded onto it. It is bundled with the wildly popular Mario Kart DS. Pre-installed on the system are Brain Age Express: Math, Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, & Photo Clock. As seen in the picture, it costs $179.99, which is $10 more than the cost of a normal DSi XL. A commercial for this new DSi XL has been released, depicting kids in a school musical explaining why they need the system for Christmas, singing to the Super Mario Bros. theme.

Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition will be released in North America on December 12. The game is an exact port of the SNES version, with no differences except for the title. It will come bundled with a Mario CD featuring songs from the Super Mario Bros. series (ex. Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine). It is also bundled with a booklet on the history of Mario.

In honor of Mario’s 25th anniversary, the Nintendo World store in New York held a special party to celebrate the occasion. Fans lined up around the block in order to get in. In front of a large, pixelated cake, NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime welcomed the crowd & introduced a special guest: Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario. Miyamoto spoke through a translator, thanking fans for their support, then proceded to cut the cake. Present was Super Mario Bros. champion speedrunner Andrew Gardikis, who preformed in front of fans (and Shigeru Miyamoto) a Super Mario Bros. speed run. However, after some trouble in World 4, Gardikis lost in World 8-3, landing on a Hammer Bros’ hammer. On display was various Mario merchandice, including a Mario chess set & a Mario drawing crafted by Shigeru Miyamoto. Photo booths were set up, allowing fans to have their picture taken among Brick Blocks & Fire Flowers.

From all this news, it seems Mario continues to wow fans-no matter how old he is.
